What is the educational benefit of this product?
As part of free play, recommended by all active pedagogies, the motor skills mat is an essential support to provide a dimension of safety, particularly for younger children.
It can support children who learn to know their body and control their movements. In the Pikler Lóczy pedagogy, particularly between 0 and 3 years old, we let them do their thing, without intervening in their postures, they take the initiative in their movements: this is the principle of free motor skills.
This mat will also be used to determine spaces in a prepared environment, as part of the Montessori method. It is also an ideal support during the sensitive period of coordination of movements identified by Maria Montessori, and which children go through between approximately 18 months and 4 years.

What is sensorimotor development?
Sensorimotor development is the process by which children develop their senses and learn to perform, control and coordinate their movements.
The senses include the best known ones: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, but also balance (thanks to the vestibular system) and proprioception (position of the body in space, given by the somatosensory system).
These different senses work in concert with each other and with the motor system.
In terms of motor development, we can distinguish two main categories of motor skills:
- gross motor skills, which refers to movements of the whole body or the large limbs and muscles of the body (legs, arms, trunk, head),
- fine motor skills, which refers to the movements of smaller muscles and limbs (fingers, hands, wrists, feet, ankles, toes, lips, tongue).
