Since its invention in Sweden more than 2 centuries ago, the espalier (or aptly named “Swedish wall”) contributes to the development of motor skills, both in the therapeutic context by serving as a support for rehabilitation exercises, and in the of our children through physical education, gymnastics... and now the game associated with sport at home thanks to this Swedish wall which ideally contributes to their “yes space”.
With its solid bars adapted to their hands and feet, it invites our children to tackle verticality by climbing it and to defy gravity by hanging from it, thus developing their balance and motor skills by strengthening their muscles and coordination of their movements. An exercise support so effective and complete that even their parents will no doubt be tempted to use it for their own workouts at home!

Manufacturing partner
Since 2015, the team at Santeri has been producing items for home fitness practitioners. Initially motivated by the desire to create equipment that is both durable and aesthetic, integrating into home decor to allow for easy daily workouts, this concept quickly led them to products aimed at child development, enabling younger ones to move at home as much as they need, in all directions, despite sometimes challenging outdoor conditions.
Where possible, the materials used are Nordic-made, the raw materials are mainly Finnish and the products are made in Finland in Tampere, where their company is based.
What is the educational benefit of this product?
The Swedish wall is perfectly suited to the development of motor skills, a central element of Pikler-Lóczy pedagogy. It allows the child to discover new sensations, develop their balance and learn to control their body through the repetition of movements.
Thanks to the Swedish wall, children will climb, descend, use their arms, their legs, but also their hands and their feet, and activate their entire body to coordinate their movements and strengthen their muscles.
At Maria Montessori, repetition plays an essential place in development. A child repeats as long as it is interesting for him, until he masters an exercise, an activity, a movement. During the sensitive period of coordination of movements (from approximately 18 months to 4 years), the advantage of the Swedish wall is to offer numerous opportunities for movement, to try, do, repeat, until the mastery of each gesture.
What is the interest from a neuroscience point of view?
- Participation in sensorimotor development* (*Through balance and coordination of movements).
- Strengthening neural circuits through repetition of movements and experiences.
What is sensorimotor development?
Sensorimotor development is the process by which children develop their senses and learn to perform, control and coordinate their movements.
The senses include the best known ones: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, but also balance (thanks to the vestibular system) and proprioception (position of the body in space, given by the somatosensory system).
These different senses work in concert with each other and with the motor system.
In terms of motor development, we can distinguish two main categories of motor skills:
- gross motor skills, which refers to movements of the whole body or the large limbs and muscles of the body (legs, arms, trunk, head),
- fine motor skills, which refers to the movements of smaller muscles and limbs (fingers, hands, wrists, feet, ankles, toes, lips, tongue).
What age groups is it suitable for?
The Swedish wall can be used by children when they begin to master the coordination of their arm-leg movements and have enough strength to be comfortable enough to get up and down (from approximately 3 years old).
They will develop their sense of balance, the coordination of their movements, learn to adapt their posture and strengthen their muscles. It can be used until adulthood and can be used by all members of the family.
What is the point of this product in summary?
- Develop motor skills, balance and strength.
- Learn to be independent.
- Strengthen his self-confidence.
