Description

The balance beam allows us to respond to our children's innate desire to challenge their balance, to walk one foot in front of the other on a sidewalk edge, a stone wall, a planter border, at home, safely.

It allows them to develop their proprioception, their control of balance and their movement, as well as their gross motor skills, by moving forward on both feet, backwards, on all fours or balancing on one foot.

They will also be able to use their fine motor skills by putting their beam in place themselves, will be able to draw their own routes thanks to its 2 types of segment, integrate it into their motor skills courses, their construction games, or create circuits for their toys, giving free rein to their imagination and creativity.

    Manufacturing partner

Since 2015, the team at Santeri has been producing items for home fitness practitioners. Initially motivated by the desire to create equipment that is both durable and aesthetic, integrating into home decor to allow for easy daily workouts, this concept quickly led them to products aimed at child development, enabling younger ones to move at home as much as they need, in all directions, despite sometimes challenging outdoor conditions.
Where possible, the materials used are Nordic-made, the raw materials are mainly Finnish and the products are made in Finland in Tampere, where their company is based.

    Educational interest

What is the educational benefit of this product?

The balance beam contributes to the development of the child's balance, proprioception and motor skills, promoting their perception of themselves and their environment, knowledge of their body and mastery through the repetition of movements. movements, as advocated by the Pikler-Lóczy pedagogy, and typical of free motor skills.

It serves as a support when he goes through the sensitive period of coordination of movements identified by Maria Montessori, which manifests itself around 18 months and lasts until approximately 4 years.

In a “yes space”, the balance beam also contributes to open play, a central element for Rudolf Steiner, particularly in the wooden construction games that were dear to him, in which the beam of balance will make its contribution - and will allow the child to make uses of it which are limited only by their imagination.
The opportunity to play and explore freely is common to all active pedagogies and is one of their foundations.

What is the interest from a neuroscience point of view?

    • Participation in sensorimotor development (*Through movement, balance and proprioception).
    • Strengthening neural circuits through repetition of movements.

    What is sensorimotor development?

Sensorimotor development is the process by which children develop their senses and learn to perform, control and coordinate their movements.

The senses include the best known ones: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, but also balance (thanks to the vestibular system) and proprioception (position of the body in space, given by the somatosensory system).

These different senses work in concert with each other and with the motor system.

In terms of motor development, we can distinguish two main categories of motor skills:

    • gross motor skills, which refers to movements of the whole body or the large limbs and muscles of the body (legs, arms, trunk, head),
    • fine motor skills, which refers to the movements of smaller muscles and limbs (fingers, hands, wrists, feet, ankles, toes, lips, tongue).

What age groups is it suitable for?

The balance beam can be used as long as your child can stand well alone. It can be used to balance, with help initially until you master your balance and try new movements and postures. It will also contribute to its motor skills courses, its construction games, will serve as a bridge on which its trains will run and under which its cars will run, etc.

What is the point of this product in summary?

    • Develop balance, proprioception and motor skills, including fine motor skills.
    • Learn to be independent.
    • Strengthen his self-confidence.
    • Nourish your creativity and imagination.
