What is the educational value of this product?
Imitation games are part of childhood and identity formation. Rudolf Steiner defines the first stage of childhood, from 0 to 7 years, as the stage of imitation - during which the child goes from being one with their mother to becoming a social and autonomous individual, and in which imaginative imitation plays a decisive role, alongside open-ended play. The child will learn and discover through it, but also express their creativity, and the cradle will support the expression of the “100 languages”, a cornerstone of Reggio pedagogy.
Through imitation play, children reproduce the behaviors they observe around them, progressing from simple imitation to the creation of complex scenarios and role-playing games in which they are no longer the main actor but the director.
Jean-Ovide Decroly considered imitation and play to be “anticipatory instincts”, essential maturation factors that give children a comprehensive understanding of reality. For Célestin Freinet, through imitation, just as through observation or reading, individuals appropriate the experience of others, diversifying and accelerating their own personal experience.
The importance of observation can also be found in the work of Maria Montessori, who described the role of the absorbent mind in children’s learning and the importance for them of following their mother everywhere to observe the world. By supporting imitation play and helping with cooking, the cradle will contribute to sensitive periods involving coordination of movements (from approximately 18 months to 4 years), order (from 0 to 6 years), social behavior (from approximately 2 to 6 years), refinement of the senses (approximately 18 months - 5 years), and small objects (during the second year).
Taking part and doing things “for real” with their parents gives children the opportunity to learn from real things in the real world, as advocated by Charlotte Mason.
What is its value from a neuroscience perspective?
- Participation in sensorimotor, cognitive and socio-emotional development* (*Through imitation of activities in the kitchen that require precision and planning (organizing and arranging small objects), role-playing and interactions with adults and other children.)
- Strengthening neural circuits through the repetition of movements, tasks and interactions.
What is sensorimotor development?
Sensorimotor development is the process through which children develop their senses and learn to perform, master and coordinate their movements.
The senses include the best-known ones, namely sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, as well as balance (through the vestibular system) and proprioception (the position of the body in space, provided by the somatosensory system).
These different senses work together and in conjunction with the motor system.
In terms of motor development, two main categories of motor skills can be distinguished:
- gross motor skills, which refer to movements involving the whole body or the body’s larger limbs and muscles (legs, arms, torso, head),
- fine motor skills, which refer to movements involving smaller muscles and limbs (fingers, hands, wrists, feet, ankles, toes, lips, tongue).
What is cognitive development?
Cognitive development is the process through which children acquire, organize and learn to use knowledge. Cognitive skills are numerous and varied, and are orchestrated by executive functions. They include, among other things, language, goal-directed behavior, planning, cognitive flexibility, short-term memory (or working memory), long-term memory, the ability not to be distracted, the ability to control emotional reactions, etc.
What is socio-emotional development?
Socio-emotional development is the process through which children acquire the ability to understand, express and manage their thoughts, emotions and behavior.
Social and emotional skills are also directly linked to how they perceive themselves and develop relationships with others.
What age groups is it suitable for?
The cradle is useful from the time children begin imitating adults’ activities in their play and contributing to household tasks, from approximately 18 months. Imitation games are useful until approximately 4 to 6 years of age, and children can engage in them alone or with others.
What is the value of this product in summary?
- Develop fine motor skills, executive functions and social skills
- Support imitation play
- Nurture the imagination
- Learn to be independent
- Build self-confidence
