For Inga, it all began by observing children and reminiscing about one’s own childhood. The joy of having fun with simple objects and discovering treasures, but also the frustration of not being able to reach things because you’re too small, saying goodbye to objects you love because you’ve grown too big for them, or having to accept that certain activities can’t be done indoors, like playing with sand, because the environment isn’t suited to it.

The idea then emerged to create equipment that allows children to express themselves, dream, play, draw, create, learn and master new skills, alone or with others. The project came to fruition in 2018, giving rise to healthy, ingenious equipment, made locally in Latvia, that is ergonomic, supports children’s development at their own pace, and grows with them.

What is the educational value of this product?

In Pikler-Lóczy education, children aged 0 to 3 learn to become familiar with their bodies and master their movements. They are allowed to act without intervention in their postures and take the initiative in their movements: this is the principle of free movement.

The triangle provides children with a unique free-movement aid. They will climb up and down, using their arms, legs, hands, and feet, and in fact their entire bodies to coordinate their movements.

For Maria Montessori, repetition plays an essential role in development. Children repeat an activity as long as it interests them, until they master an exercise, activity, or movement. During the sensitive period for movement coordination (from approximately 18 months to 4 years), the triangle offers numerous opportunities for movement, allowing children to try, do, and repeat until they master each movement.

The Pikler-Lóczy triangle also gives children the opportunity to make it more than a simple movement aid. The concept of free play, which was dear to Rudolf Steiner, takes shape when they give free rein to their imagination.

What are the benefits from a neuroscience perspective?

• Contributes to sensorimotor development* (*Through the coordination of movements and adjustment of posture.).
• Strengthens neural circuits through the repetition of movements.

What is sensorimotor development?

Sensorimotor development is the process through which children develop their senses and learn to perform, master, and coordinate their movements.

The senses include the best-known ones: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, as well as balance (through the vestibular system) and proprioception (the position of the body in space, provided by the somatosensory system).

These different senses work together and in conjunction with the motor system.

In terms of motor development, two main categories of motor skills can be distinguished:

• gross motor skills, which refer to movements of the entire body or its larger limbs and muscles (legs, arms, torso, head),
• fine motor skills, which refer to movements of smaller muscles and limbs (fingers, hands, wrists, feet, ankles, toes, lips, tongue).

What age groups is it suitable for?

The 4-in-1 adjustable triangle can be actively used as a brachiation bar from the moment your child tries to stand up independently, then as a triangle once they are able to stand, and up to approximately 8 years of age. It can be climbed, transformed into a play prop for pretend play, used as a mobile, serve as an indoor slide when combined with its ramp, become a motor-skills course, or even a tent, playhouse, etc.

What are the benefits of this product in summary?

• Develop motor skills, particularly movement coordination.
• Learn to be independent.
• Build self-confidence.
