Description

This sink was designed to contribute to the development of the child through learning everyday gestures and imitation games. At their height, it offers our children, including the youngest among them, easy access to learn certain hygiene gestures (such as washing their hands or brushing their teeth) and to carry out household tasks. at home (such as cleaning fruit and vegetables or rinsing plates, dishes and cutlery).

Its removable basin allows them to practice transferring, gives them the opportunity to clean it themselves, and possibly allows their parents to do it just as quickly and easily, and then let them put it back in their place.
The shelves under the sink can be used as storage for their sponges, spare towels, containers, soap, and other utensils when they are not being used for the current activity.

The sink also contributes, in the same way as other accessories found in the house such as the stove, the dinette, the DIY workshop, etc., to the construction of the identity of our future adults.

Thanks to their sink, they reproduce scenes from their daily life, the gestures and habits of their parents and the adults around them, learn to play with others, participate in the life of the house, and thus assimilate the rules, the codes and social roles, contributing to their socio-emotional development. They learn to manipulate small objects, plan their actions, their behaviors are goal-oriented, and they thus develop their executive functions and their fine motor skills.

      Educational interest

What is the educational benefit of this product?

The sink contributes to the prepared environment and to the child who develops his autonomy by learning to do things alone, pillars of Montessori pedagogy.
It is also a place where children will imitate the behaviors they observe in those around them. The importance of observation is also found in Maria Montessori, who described the role of the absorbing mind in the child's learning and the importance for him to follow his mother everywhere to observe the world.
By supporting imitation games, learning hygiene gestures and participating in household chores, the sink will contribute to sensitive periods of coordination of movements (from approximately 18 months to 4 years), order (0 to 6 years), social behavior (more or less 2 to 6 years), refinement of the senses (around 18 months - 5 years), and small objects (during his second year).

The sink serves as a support for imitation games, which are part of childhood and the construction of identity. Rudolf Steiner also defines the first cycle of childhood, between 0 and 7 years, as that of imitation - during which he goes from being one with his mother to that of a social and autonomous individual, and where imaginative imitation will hold a determining place in the same way as open play.
It is through imitation play that the child will reproduce the behaviors he observes around him, from simple imitation to the creation of complex scenarios and role-playing games in which he is no longer the actor. principal but the director.

Jean-Ovide Decroly considered imitation and play as “anticipatory instincts”, essential maturation factors which give him a global understanding of reality. For Célestin Freinet, through imitation, just like observation or reading, the individual appropriates the experience of others, diversifying and accelerating his personal experience.

Participating, doing it yourself, “for real”, gives the child the opportunity to learn about real things in the real world, as recommended by Charlotte Mason.

What is the interest from a neuroscience point of view?

      • Participation in sensorimotor, cognitive and socio-affective development* (*Through carrying out everyday tasks, learning cleanliness and hygiene gestures, imitating activities in the bathroom and kitchen which require precision and planning (cleaning hands, teeth, transferring, storing and disposing of small objects, etc.), role playing and interactions with adults and other children).
      • Strengthening neural circuits through repetition of gestures and tasks.

      What is sensorimotor development?

Sensorimotor development is the process by which children develop their senses and learn to perform, control and coordinate their movements.

The senses include the best known ones: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, but also balance (thanks to the vestibular system) and proprioception (position of the body in space, given by the somatosensory system).

These different senses work in concert with each other and with the motor system.

In terms of motor development, we can distinguish two main categories of motor skills:

      • gross motor skills, which refers to movements of the whole body or the large limbs and muscles of the body (legs, arms, trunk, head),
      • fine motor skills, which refers to the movements of smaller muscles and limbs (fingers, hands, wrists, feet, ankles, toes, lips, tongue).

      What is cognitive development?

Cognitive development is the process by which children acquire, organize and learn to use knowledge. Cognitive skills are numerous, varied, and are orchestrated by executive functions. They include, among others, language, goal-directed behaviors, planning, cognitive flexibility, short-term memory (or working memory), long-term memory, the ability not to be distracted, to control emotional reactions, etc.

      What is socio-emotional development?

Social-emotional development is the process by which children acquire the ability to understand, express and manage their thoughts, emotions and behavior.
Social and emotional skills are also directly linked to how they perceive themselves and develop relationships with others.

What age groups is it suitable for?

The sink is used from the moment the child begins to imitate the activities of adults in his games, to carry out hygiene procedures alone and to contribute to household chores, from around 12 months. Imitation games are useful until approximately 4 to 6 years old. The size of the sink is intended for children between approximately 12 months and 5 years old.
